Presented by Rev. Don Barton
Monday, July 28, 2025
10:00 AM  - 12:00 PM

This workshop is for all lay leaders who would like to understand how to read financial statements and what they tell us.  Invite your board members!

This presentation is designed for ministers and lay church leaders who lack a strong accounting background to better prepare them to plan, implement, and manage sound financial oversight in their ministries. The following financial reports are explained in basic terms using simple numbers for easy comprehension: Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, and Budgets. The workshop focuses on why financial reports are essential, the purpose each financial statement serves, and how the various financial reports must be reviewed in conjunction with one another for a complete picture of a ministry’s financial health. Accounting methods, the finance committee, and restricted donations are additional topics covered.

Rev. Don Barton has almost 30 years of combined leadership experience in a variety of industries; including retail, hospitality, professional accounting, as well as Unity. While general manager of a high-volume restaurant at the age of 28, he gained critical experience in “crisis” management that has served him well in other situations. As a CPA with years of applied experience, Rev. Don is skilled in dissecting data and interpreting financial statements and the underlying operational information it represents into easy-to-understand concepts to enable sound decision-making.
